Buzz Lightyear is a toy based on a Space Ranger from Toy Box who is a party member in Kingdom Hearts III. He originated in the Disney/Pixar film Toy Story.

The proposal folder shown to Buena Vista included plans for a world based on Toy Story in the original Kingdom Hearts. For Kingdom Hearts II a model of Buzz Lightyear and Woody were created for a similar purpose but according to the series' director Tetsuya Nomura, there was never a chance to present them to Disney so the idea was scrapped. Both the world and the characters finally made their appearance in Kingdom Hearts III as party members in Toy Box.

Story

Kingdom Hearts III

Buzz is initially seen with Woody, Rex, Hamm and the soldiers on Andy's bed, as they prepare to take on the intruders that have appeared in Andy's room. They plan to spring upon the intruders on Woody's count; however, before Woody is able to give the signal to attack, Buzz stops his friends, as three new toys - Sora, Donald and Goofy - have shown up.

After the Heartless have been defeated, Sora, Donald and Goofy introduce themselves to Woody and his friends, saying that they'd been fighting these intruders for a long time. Buzz, suspicious of the newcomers, points his laser at Sora, demanding that Sora tell him where and why. He is stopped by Woody, who says that there is no need to interrogate them.

Appearance

Buzz is a Space Ranger action figure. He has a large build and a very prominent chin. His head and neck are covered in a tight purple cowl. He has a white space suit with a green chest plate featuring red, green, and blue buttons on the right side and a round red button on his left used to deploy and collapse the wings from his jet pack. His right arm ordinarily has a light bulb that flashes red to simulate a laser, however during the events of Kingdom Hearts III, it is replaced by a working laser. He has a collapsible, clear dome helmet that is controlled by the purple knobs on the side of it. There is a black coil around his waist.

Personality

Buzz is good friends with Woody, who helped him through his early delusional phase of belieiving he was the actual Buzz Lightyear character instead of a toy. He is also a voice of reason and reassurance among his friends; he tends to calm the normally nervous Rex by complimenting him on even accidental help he gives and makes simply tasks seem very important to give his friend confidence. Buzz is cautious and skeptical following the disappearance of his friends; he believes the best course of action is to wait around in Andy's Room until everyone comes back. His despair from being separated from Andy and the rest of their friends caused darkness to form in his heart. Despite their help repelling the Heartless, Buzz distrusts Sora, Donald, and Goofy initially, becoming more suspicious of them as Donald refuses to let Sora respond to Buzz's questions.

Buzz's skepticism borders on the ridiculous at times; despite the fact he is seen things that normal wouldn't be possible in his original world, he refuses to believe that they've been taken to an alternate version of it. In fact, when Sora explains in detail what Young Xehanort meant by splitting the world in two, Buzz thinks he is suffering delusions like he first did and actually thinks he is the character from the game he is supposedly from. However, after seeing the Heartless possess toys, Buzz becomes more open-minded about "supernatural" things. He also warms up Sora, Donald and Goofy, apologizing for his behavior, though Sora assures that he understands that Buzz was just looking out for his friends.

Abilities

Kingdom Hearts III

Buzz is a well-round fighter that specializes in attacking enemies from short to long distance. Due to Xehanort's meddling and curiosity that splits their world with a fabricated alternate version of their world, Buzz is now able to shoot real lasers from his hand, which greatly benefits him during battle. Buzz can also use his wings and spinning around while moving to deal damage to enemies, and if he bumps to another ally, they will be stunned for a second. Buzz's laser attack deals small damage, but is his only way to be a reliable attacker to floating enemies where Donald's magic, Woody's rope, and Sora's Keyblade can reach. Buzz's basic attacks deals damage to a small area by slamming his arms on the ground, which can be useful in clearing weak enemies faster.

Origin

Buzz Lightyear first appeared in 1995, in Pixar's first feature film Toy Story, voiced by Tim Allen, and has since appeared in its sequels, as well as several television specials and shorts. The character also appeared in Disney/Pixar's animated film Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins, and the animated television series Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, which both are about the character which the toy in Toy Story is based on. For the television series, he was voiced by Patrick Warburton. Mike MacRae served as Buzz's voice actor for all Disney-released video games involving the character, and reprised his role for Kingdom Hearts III.

In the 1995 film, Buzz Lightyear is the newest toy in the collection of a boy named Andy. He initially believes that he is the real Buzz Lightyear, a space ranger on a mission to defeat his arch-nemesis, the evil Emperor Zurg, and repeatedly attempts to return to space. Woody, Andy's favorite toy, is jealous about the amount of time Andy now spends with Buzz and tried to hide him from Andy. In the process, he gets them both lost and in the possession of Sid, the toy-torturer who lives next door. In Sid's house, Buzz sees a commercial for the Buzz Lightyear action figure and finally realizes he is just a toy, sending him into a depression. With Woody's help, he regains his composure and the two of them escape back to Andy and become close friends.
