Symphony of Sorcery is a world from Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, the second to be based on the Disney film, Fantasia. The world features Mickey as a sorcerer commanding the Brooms.

Like Timeless River and Country of the Musketeers, Symphony of Sorcery is set in the past, during a period where Mickey was in pursuit of knowledge to become a Keyblade Master.

Development

Since the conception of the first Kingdom Hearts, Tetsuya Nomura had wanted to include a world based on Fantasia, but was unable to and ended up only including Chernabog as a boss in End of the World, though in a battlefield very similar to the Night on Bald Mountain segment.[1]

Story

Between Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts

Sometime after Terra-Xehanort's descent into darkness, his Heartless, Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, attacked many worlds and swallowed them into the darkness. One of these worlds was Symphony of Sorcery. During the destruction of the world, Chernabog and his mountain ended up in the End of the World, where he fought Sora and company, but he was defeated. Though it was restored after Sora defeated Ansem and destroyed the End of the World, Symphony of Sorcery remained in a state of deep sleep instead of returning to the Realm of Light, plagued by Nightmare Dream Eaters.

Sora

Sora witnesses Mickey casting magic spells with Yen Sid's stolen hat. He brings in a few waves, shooting starts, thunderclouds and a Dream Eater, which then attacks Sora and knocks him out cold.

Sora reawakens in what appears to be Yen Sid's tower. However, since a sleeping Mickey, who is covered in darkness, does not regonise him, Sora guesses it's another dream world, of the days when Mickey was training to become a Keyblade master. Turns out the musical book has been possesed by Darkness through a monster, trapping Mickey in the book and preventing anyone from entering. Only the power of sound can defeat the darkness. Sora offers to help Mickey, and the latter accepts and summons another book.

FLASHBACK: Mickey is bringing up buckets of water when he suddenly sees Yen Sid's crown on his desk. He swipes it, puts it on, then begins to cast magic, unknowingly summoning a Dream Eater.

Sora then enters the unpossessed book through a beam of light from his Keyblade.

Sora soon finds the Power of Sound in the Pastoral Symphony area, but then again confronts Young Master Xehanort, who explains that he'll be waiting for Sora in an area beyond sleep. Sora returns to the tower, and Mickey unlocks his power of sound. However, it is not enough. Sora says it's okay, then closes his eyes. Another musical sheet appears, and Sora uses them to create a powerful song that enhances in power. This destroys the darkness, yet Mickey remains covered in darkness.

Sora enters the possessed book and fights the Spellican in the Sorcerer's Apprentice area, freeing Mickey and allowing him to wake up. He thanks Sora, then heads back to his job. After a Keyhole appears, Sora seals it, ending his story.

Riku

Riku enters the tower, only to see it starting to flood from the water running down the staircase. Riku wonders if it is coming from the top. He gets to the top, only to see the room flooded and Mickey trapped in darkness. Riku attempts to smash the book with his Keyblade, but Mickey reminds him that brutal force won't work. Mickey does not recognize Riku, but does have a feeling that they'll be friends one day. Mickey brings in a sheet of music. Riku goes in.

FLASHBACK: Mickey casts a spell on a broom, causing it to sprout arms. The broom then begins to featch buckets of water. Mickey falls asleep. By time he wakes up, the room is flooded with water. Now there are many brooms featching water. Mickey tries to stop them with magic, but unknowingly summons a Dream Eater.

Riku manages to obtain the power of sound in the Nutcracker Suite area, but the sheets he was in suddenly goes all black, forcing Riku to fall into it. He is now in the Night on Bald Mountain area and reaches a spooky volcano and again encounters Young Master Xehanort. The mysterious man explains that the Keyblade picked Riku first, but due to being unable to control his darkness, he lost it to Sora. As Riku demands what is up the man's sleeve, the volcano begins to erupt, and Chernabog suddenly appears (Young Master Xehanort escaped during this time). Riku fights him during a dive.

Following the battle, Riku finds himself in Yen Sid's tower and uses the power of sound, but it was not enough. Another power of sound appears to help him. The music managed to get rid of the flooding water and free Mickey. Riku suspects that Sora helped him, causing slight déjà vu in Mickey. Riku explains about Sora to Mickey, on how Sora makes everyone happy and lucky. Mickey thinks it's thanks to Riku that Sora is who he is. They part ways with a handshake and a promises to meet again one day. A Keyhole appears and is sealed.

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance

The world was first announced in a January issue of Famitsu. Several locations based on Fantasia were shown in January issues. Mickey Mouse is shown wearing his attire from Sorcerer's Apprentice working magic on the brooms inside the Mysterious Tower, and demonstrating a beautiful performance of his mastery over magic on top of a mountain platform. Riku is shown facing Chernabog, in a location based on the Night on Bald Mountain segment, as well as standing in front of a book that plays a symphony. Sora is seen confronting the Unknown in an area based on the Pastoral Symphony. Other screenshots show landscapes resembling both the Nutcracker Suite symphony.
