Kingdom Hearts II
The Lion King (1994)

Simba's childhood friend Nala has grown up to be a strong lioness. She's searching for help to save the Pride Lands, which have fallen into a terrible state.
"He's not the Simba I remember. Something about hakuna matata..."
—Nala concerned about Simba

Nala is a lioness from the Pride Lands in Kingdom Hearts II. She originates from the Disney movie The Lion King. She is the daughter of the lioness Sarafina and was decided to be Simba's wife ever since they were cubs.

Story[edit]

Before Kingdom Hearts II[edit]

Before the Pride Lands were taken over by the heartless, Nala as a cub was apart of a pride of lions that lived there, led by their king Mufasa and she was best friends with his son, Simba who was going to be the future king. But when she heard that Simba and their king were dead, she was devastated, and Scar became the new king of the Pride Lands, and ravaged the country in the process.

Kingdom Hearts II[edit]

Nala grows up to be a fine lioness. When Sora, Donald, and Goofy first visit her world, they save her from a group of Living Bones that are chasing her. Seeing hope for her pride, Nala then asks them to help her defeat Scar. Nala then leads the group to Pride Rock, where they meet Rafiki. The elderly mandrill deems Sora the wrong person to remove Scar and the hyenas who serve him from the Pride Lands.

When Nala tells Sora about Simba's existence, the Keyblade wielder tells her that Simba is alive and well. As the group sets off to find Simba, they reach a deep chasm; Nala crosses the chasm with no hesitation, while Sora, Donald, and Goofy remain on the opposite side, fear-stricken. Nala teaches Sora how to dash in his lion form in order to leap over the chasm.

Together with Sora, Donald, and Goofy, Nala is reunited with Simba at the Oasis, and after some persuasion from his friends, Simba heads back to the Pride Lands to face Scar. After a fierce battle with Scar, Simba becomes the new king of the Pride Lands.

Nala and Simba present their cub to the Pride Lands.

Upon Sora's second visit to the Pride Lands, Nala has become Simba's mate and is carrying their child. Nala is first seen trying to encourage Simba to take control of the Pride Lands. When the Ghost of Scar terrorizes the Pride Lands, everyone runs away in fear, except Nala, who stays behind and is protected by Pumbaa until Simba comes back to face his fear.

Some time after Xemnas's defeat, Nala and Simba look on as Rafiki holds their newborn cub high above the restored Pride Rock so that all of the animals who reside in the Pride Lands can observe their new princess.

Design[edit]

Nala is an adult lioness with a lithe build, similar to the other lionesses of Pride Rock. She is primarily light tan in color, with cream-colored fur on her muzzle and underbelly, as well as bordering her eyes. Unlike most of the other lionesses, her paws are the same color as her pelt. Her eyes are light blue and her sclera, like all the lions, are yellow. The tuft of her tail, like all the lionesses', is brown.

Personality[edit]

Nala is Simba's childhood friend who is constantly providing positive support and encouragement to the worried king. Nala has a strong loyalty and desire to help others-specifically, her pride, as she is seen hunting outside of the usual Pride Lands in an attempt to save the starving pride. Nala also has a great amount of bravery as she is willing to attack Scar, the once-present king of the Pride Lands, in order to let Sora, Donald, and Goofy escape. Nala is a skilled and fierce fighter, as seen when she flips Simba on his back and pins him to the ground.

Origin[edit]

Nala originates from the Disney 1994 animated film, The Lion King. Nala is Simba's spunky best friend and fiancée, though she was not fond of the idea of marriage initially. She is first seen being bathed by her mother Sarafina while they were paying a visit to Simba and his mother, Sarabi. Tricked by his uncle Scar to visit the Elephant Graveyard, Simba asks Nala to accompany him. When Nala and Simba reach the graveyard, they encounter Scar's hyena servants, Shenzi, Banzai and Ed. Fortunately, they are saved by Simba's father, Mufasa, before the hyenas could eat them, and Zazu is then tasked with escorting Nala back home. When Scar informs the pride of Mufasa's and Simba's deaths, she is seen mourning with the other lionesses.

Years later, Nala has grown into a strong lioness and is reunited with Simba after hunting one of his friends, Pumbaa, for food. Nala is overjoyed to learn that her best friend is alive, and is filled with hope that Simba, as rightful heir to the Pride Lands, can return to their homeland and end Scar's tyranny. Nala and Simba spend a romantic evening in the jungle together, their feelings for one another being apparent. However, when Simba refuses to return to the Pride Lands in spite of being made aware its terrible state, Nala storms off after a heated argument. When Nala, Timon and Pumbaa discover from Rafiki that Simba has returned to the Pride Lands the next morning, they follow Simba, and offer to help him reclaim his kingdom. While Timon and Pumbaa distract the hyenas, Simba sends Nala to look for his mother and rally the rest of the pride. She complies and arrives with them as Simba confronts Scar. Like the other lionesses, she is shocked when Scar forces Simba to admit his guilt in Mufasa's death. However, Nala is one of the first lionesses to join in the battle against Scar when the latter reveals that he was the true cause of Mufasa's death. After the battle, she is seen looking on as Simba reclaims his throne. Some time afterwards, Nala becomes Simba's mate and had a cub with him, a daughter named Kiara.
