It could be, but if the Wikia site will be continue to be called "Kingdom Hearts Wiki" it would be easier to build the name Kingdom Hearts Database than compete with the same name. Similar to the WoWWiki, Wowpedia situation.

Extension-wise, we'd like to be able to install any extensions the community agrees to. If you are going to maintain the servers, can you agree to that?

As long as the extension is secure and compatible with our setup, I shouldn't have a problem with it, but I honestly can't make any guarantees. You can check Special:Version for the list of current extensions; if any come to mind as missing we can talk about those now. Regarding other wikis--I deal with these one at a time. I'm not going to start up a bunch of new wikis for the network, but if a wiki community is frustrated and wants to move, I may be able to accommodate them. --Porplemontage 21:27, 10 November 2010 (EST)

We are pretty set on the name "khwiki.net".
Desire to retain Monaco was a big part of the reason for our move, so we would like Monaco installed as soon as possible, possibly followed by Oasis for those who liked it. Without Monaco, the community probably won't move here.
The other wikis we were talking with would also be moving from wikia, and the main issue is that most of our editor-base is shared among these wikis, so we'd like to retain accounts across the system (for example, if an editor gets a talk page message on one wiki, he is notified across all the others). This is not quite as critical as Monaco, but still very important to us.
Extension-wise, what we were planning on was having a page in the forums where users can request new extensions, both new ones and those that other wikis have used successfully. This isn't as critical as Monaco or khwiki.net, but we would like it to happen. When you say you can't make any guarantees, is that more "I'll try, but I might not be physically able to get them all", or "It's my decision"?

Domain change is easy, but I'm not going to buy another domain unless the move is actually going to happen. Monaco is mangled up with Wikia's code and it's not as easy as just installing it. I read someone over at NIWA was working on making it a normal skin. I can't fix Monaco to work here, so that's up to you or someone else to fix it first. I know how to share a user table among wikis, but not how to get this cross-wiki notification example going. Extensions I'm saying it's my decision because I can't promise you'll get every extension you want; it totally depends on the extension in question. I promoted the three editors that I could, but it won't let me promote anyone who hasn't edited on this wiki. I'm going to try and contact each of our past staff to see if they even plan on coming to this wiki, and if they don't respond soon, I'll just take that as them declining their status at this site. Sorry, allow me to explain. It's easier to maintain the wiki with fewer extensions installed so as we upgrade and things change there is less likely to be compatibility issues. Since the wiki already largely used a JavaScript solution for tabs, it does not make sense to me to have an extra extension installed which does the same thing and is used less. Having JavaScript code and an extension to accomplish the same thing is inefficient because we either have an extension we don't truly need or extra JavaScript code we don't truly need. In addition, it means that there will be only one standard used across the wiki, and I think that consistency is generally good. With regard to that page, I fixed the issue. It was simply a matter of closing the initial div tags which encompass the tab divs. --Porplemontage (talk) 18:07, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Monaco

I managed to contact the people at tfwiki, and it seems as if Monaco should be ready to be installed; at the very least, its skin is. Could you install it as an optional skin for the wiki? None of the code I've found does anything, except for an old customization of monobook I found on the Transformers Wiki at wikia, which isn't what we're going for. Thanks! I think we've got it mostly up to speed again. We can fix the sidebar header images ourselves, but the biggest problem I see is that the sidebar does not tree properly, and that the monobook and monaco sidebars use the same definition. Loading

Why is it that this wiki is so slow? It's not just me, and it's only this site; I can load every other page I browse faster than this, even 1080p HD videos on YouTube. Is it a server problem?

Monaco Sidebar

Alright, I've done some trials (using default CSS) and found something kind of interesting. Despite the sidebar being set up properly, sometimes the sidebar doesn't come up at all:

You can see on the top and bottom right images, the expansion and arrows come up just fine. But on the bottom left, it does not. This seems to be accompanied with the page taking longer to load, perhaps because it can't find the Monaco.js file. I confirmed this through element inspecting in Chrome; for the bottom left example, the resource for "Monaco.js" is not loaded, despite "Monaco.js/Sidebar.js" being loaded. For the other two examples, it loads just fine.

I'm really not sure what can be done about this. As far as I can tell the issue is on the server end, with Monaco.js just not loading properly. The only other thing I can think to do is put the jQuery code in Monaco.js/Sidebar.js instead, though I'm not sure this would work 100% of the time.

As for the content and CSS, we can adjust that pretty simply once everything else is up and running.

I Have Something To Ask You

Hello. I'm UxieLover1994 of the Spyro Wiki. We moved to ShoutWiki late last year due to the Wikia skin, but now ShoutWiki's playing up, and I've not edited there for about a week. I thought they would be better than Wikia, but I was wrong. I regret this move, and now I'm thinking of becoming independet. I'm kindly asking if you could help us, please?

Sidebar

I'm trying to get the sidebar fixed, and I think I've found the main issue with the last try. However, I've noticed that the font-size of the cells increases the further into a tree I go, and I can't find any obvious controls for that action in order to fix it. Bots plus

What are our options for bots? Could we get AutoWikiBrowser?

Bots - You can do whatever you like. I personally don't know much about them, but on my other wikis users have been able to use them just fine. They are something you manage on your end. AWB - I read that's for Windows, so it looks like you use it on your own computer, not something I would have to install. For the search, we're using MW:Manual:$wgEnableMWSuggest with MW:Extension:TitleKey. I'm not sure what we would modify, exactly. --Porplemontage 23:07, 31 May 2011 (EDT)

Forums

I noticed today that recently created forums aren't showing up in the forum indexes. KrytenKoro says this has been the case ever since we moved from Wikia. I even tried clearing my cache and refreshing several times, to no avail. Based on the timestamps on the forums in the index, it's taking about three or four days for a newly created forum to be put into the index. Extension request

We are having an "image purging" but the process becomes tiresome because all the images needs to be deleted manually (go to the file, click delete, give reason and confirm etc. for every image), so I got an idea and found this extension: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:DeleteBatch

This extension would make the deletion process faster and much more finger sparing as admins only need to copypaste the filenames (File namespace is still needed, of course) and confirm, the script deletes all of the listed pages.

This extension is bureaucrat only by default so you would need to enable it for admins too, which is an easy task.

I generally stay away from beta-tagged ones unless we absolutely need it. On top of that, you'll read on the talk page that it doesn't delete files properly. Multiple Upload

We have the latest version of the extension; these are likely bugs and the thing is not well-maintained. I just messed around with it to show the five URL upload fields. What happened to MonoBook? That's the skin I normally use on most wikis (excluding WikiSimpsons and, by force, the Spyro Wiki).

What was Monaco is now MonoBook and what was MonoBook is now ClassicBook. You can switch to ClassicBook in your preferences. Edit Counts

In order for us to not look brand new around here, would it be possible to inflate the edit counts of Dark-EnigmaXIII and myself to the values from the Wikia site? EDIT: On a related note, the Editcount extension is not working properly; the code {{Special:Editcount/Soxra}} should produce something like 3,400, but instead produces 3,295. The extension just counts all the edits it finds, so there's no worthwhile way to bump up the numbers. It should technically be accurate looking at this wiki. The embed feature was removed because it invalidates page cache when it's used. Hey, we've got a request for you. We'd like to be able to create an interwiki link with the Keyhole (www.kingdomhearts.wikia.com) that will go in the sidebar, like how the foreign-language ones are. Right now we have "khw:" as the prefix, but if possible, we want to keep that for inline links and use a separate prefix for the sidebar link, "keyhole:". RSS Reader plugin

Thanks for changing the language link Porplemontage. Could you check what version of the rss plugin is installed here? Maybe the <rss> parser extension is a standard one, I'm not really sure about this stuff. The formatting of the date looks odd (+0000) and also seems to differ from rss source to rss source. There is a parameter that should change that but it doesn't seem to be implemented in the 1.9 version. Curiously the extension wiki uses the same version of the plugin so I'm not sure if it really works how it was descriped on their page. User renaming

So far, it's not widely known a bcrat can change a user's name, but in case someone asks for it. As you know, doing that requires the extension to reattribute all edits of the old name to the new name. This can cause high server load, which is why Wikimedia wikis don't allow users with over 10,000 edits to have a change (of course, they have more powerful servers, but also much more content than the wikis you host combined). What do you think is the maximum amount of edits your server can handle without disrupting the wiki and/or the server? It's best to come up with some number, an undetermined amount is pretty much no answer here. --So ve 04:13, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

There's no need for a restriction based on number of edits. Above 5000, the updates are placed in the job queue, so the operation is processed over time. The most I've seen for a renamed user on the Super Mario Wiki was 15,000 edits. A rule of thumb for bureaucrats would be not to rename too many users over 5000 edits in a short period of time to avoid backing-up the job queue. I don't know if this policy is still active, at least on Wikipedia. I was able to find a user renamed with 44,000 edits to make sure this wouldn't be an issue. --Porplemontage (talk) 04:40, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Gif rescaling

I found this which I believe is the solution to our gif-thumbnail problems. The max size we want to upload is 800x600, maybe expand to 1028x720 later when KH HD comes out and I can upload gifs of that but, would the thumbnails, via that property, be animated? I increased it to 1.5e7 and File:Ars Arcanum KHCOM.gif works now. You can do the math that 480 * 360 * 76 = 1.31e7 for that image. I'm hesitant to increase the limit any more because already creating new thumbs of that image takes a while because it's a lot to process. I definitely would not recommend HD gifs; it's best that they're sized for the article pages. Specs about the wiki

Hey, I'm an admin of the French KHWiki, and we're currently looking into moving out of Wikia like you guys did a while back. How did you get your domain name? And how did you move all the pages from the old wiki to this one, history and all?

Hi. I'm hosting the wiki on a dedicated server I rent from hivelocity.net, and I registered the domain name on godaddy.com. I got all the pages by downloading Wikia's full database dump on Special:Statistics and imported it using the importDump.php MediaWiki maintenance script. Well, but that's just using the files on the wiki. I should have explained what I was trying to do. I'm trying to get a song to play on my userpage, the way some users do on the DisneyWiki (see here). I saw that what they did was some sort of template, which I tried to imitate, but it didn't work. So, I'm wondering if there's some other way. The point is that they use videos from YouTube, and somehow get the audio to play alone, without the video. I know you can somehow in html, or something like that, but that didn't work either. Again, if that's not possible, it's fine.

KHWiki - Mobile

Hey. I recently brought up the idea of creating a mobile app for the Kingdom Hearts Wiki, and have spent the last week trying to learn C# to code an app. However, I'm struggling. Pretty bad. Random alternating logo

Is this possible? From what I've seen, it seems it must be JS, and I have two scripts here, but though I've been using it for two weeks, it's suddenly breaking the tabber divs in the last couple days. Image Upload prompt

Hey, UnknownChaser and I were wondering if we could implement this to the Special:Upload page, the way Wikipedia and Wikimedia do it. I've already coded the template, so all I figure we'd need to do is find a way to ask for those parameters when we're uploading images, the way it asks for licensing, for example. I imagine that's something only you could do (I think it's JS-related (which I don't know) or something, but I'm not sure). The idea is that it will help better manage the file summaries. Transparent images

Question about Choose/Option

Hey, sorry I keep bothering you with something every couple days. So I'm trying to make a new talk bubble template for ENX, and I've run into a problem. See, I'm trying to use Choose/Option hooks so the talk bubble appearance change randomly. However, from what I gathered, those hooks make it difficult to actually use the talk bubble templates inside the hooks, which I think was confirmed here. I'm wondering, though, if that's true and, if it is, whether there's anything on this page that actually helps. Create a template that handles a parameter differently then create another template like this that calls the first template using choose with the parameter set to different values:

Database error when searching

We hit the limit while working on making userboxes and putting them all on one page, but split the page after that. A few days ago ENX reached the limit on his userpage, but he split the userboxes to another page as well. I think both times are because of too much instances of Template:!. I believe {{!}} is a magic word, so would it be possible to exclude it from the template count? Here's a list of pages that hit the limit, but they're mostly archives. Since we are planning on making more userboxes, I thought it would be useful to increase the limit, so people can add all the userboxes they want onto their page. In terms of blocking, all accounts are the same. There is no setting to prevent certain accounts from being blocked, so we should be careful with who that is given out to. Keeping the admin rank sort of sacred, we also have the moderator and artist ranks. I know for me, this issue occurs when in the mobile view, because the text size for the lines in recent changes is just all over the place. I click on what is supposed to be the "diff" link, the text I was looking at shrinks, and it turns out the location I pressed was "really" the rollback link for the line below. Curious Question

Hiya, Porplemontage! :) My apologies for popping out the blue like this, but I wanted to ask a question I've had on my mind for a while. Have you heard about the new changes that Community Wikia have been implementing lately? The biggest one being that they renamed "Wikia" as "Fandom". Not a lot of users are happy about it. ^_^; A friend and I got talking about the changes being made, and how unsatisfactory the changes are for wikias all over the web. Anyway, the conversation got me thinking about how many users have been thinking of creating their own domains, like the KHWiki, to break away from Community Wikia's thumb. I want to asked you, as you set the KHWiki up when it broke away from the Keyhole, how much goes into doing something like that, specifically the cost to maintain a site with and without ads to pay for the servers and stuff like that?--Ninja Sheik 21:25, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

Wow, I haven't been following Wikia lately. They never just give their users what they want, huh? Well a domain costs about $12 per year. The hosting depends entirely on how much traffic you get. You could start off with shared hosting, say $10 a month, all the way up to a dedicated server for hundreds. As my sites grew, that's the path I took: shared hosting -> VPS -> dedicated servers. Throwing up some AdSense ads should cover things for a while. The site would likely run slower on shared hosting, as opposed to a dedicated server where you can really fine-tune all the server software to meet your needs. What communities might want to leave? @Ignis: Lol! XD Now, now, don't go jumping to conclusions just yet. It's true that the thought of launching my own wiki as crossed my mind, but I'm not doing anything right now. I simply don't have the time to something like. I'm editing on three wikias right now, two of which I'm an admin on (KHWiki included, of course), so I don't have the time to launch another wiki. ^__^; Plus, I have my other side hobbies, like fanfiction writing/reading and stuff. I have an idea of what series I want do it on, but for now, I'm gonna keep it a secret! ;) No point of revealing it since I'm not actually planning to launch it just yet. Lol! XD For now, I'm just gathering information about the process of creating a domain separate from Community Wikia.

@Porplemontage: Nope, they do not. I still edit on Wikia, so I know people are very unsatisfied with the changes that are being made right now. However, in regards to whole communities, I honestly don't know. Users I'm friends with are complaining about the changes and said they would like for the wikias they're editing on to move to an independent domain like the KHWiki. Nothing's been decided, though. Just whispers and the like going around some of the other wikias I frequent on but don't necessarily edit on. Honestly, for big communities like the Narutopedia, moving domains after being so long established in a bad move, and that's why unsatisfied users are putting up with the changes. They don't want to deal with things like the costs/bills that comes with hosting their own domains. But as Ignis deduced, I am mainly asking because I have been thinking about establishing my own wikia, in the future, but I haven't decided on anything. Gotcha! We ran AdSense ads for a long time, but now I use Sortable since they make it easy to pull from all the top ad networks, not just Google. XD You've lost me when you start mentioning MediaWiki, Aspache, PHP, and MySQL. ^__^; Like I said before, when it comes to software and the technical aspects of running a website, I'm 100% clueless. I do know that websites need ads to help pay for servers, and traffic helps with that, too. If they don't want ads on their site, they pay for it themselves. Isn't that how it goes, basically? I do like editing for my favorite shows, and it's something I'd like to continue in the future, but since the changes being made on Community Wikia are unsatisfactory (and I hate how they run things sometimes) and I hate editing on Wikipedia (though, I lend an occasional hand for my favorite shows), I've been thinking establishing my own domain for at least one series I like, but I haven't come to a concrete decision. You've got the right idea. First step would be to purchase the domain and web hosting, say from a company like BlueHost. They will give you login details for accessing the site control panel. Using that, you install MediaWiki. They may offer a really simple way to install MediaWiki, but if not, you can download the installation package yourself, upload it to your hosting, and create the MySQL database. I'm not going to get into the nitty-gritty technical details here - if you need help after you already have the domain and hosting, then I can properly walk you through some of this. After you have installed MediaWiki, you're free to add content to the site. Once the site has a decent amount of content, then you can apply to Google AdSense, and once you're approved, you can start inserting the ad code onto the site. Can't login

This is User:Ignis. And as described on the tin, I can't login. :/ At first, it started giving me a session hijacking message: "There seems to be a problem with your login session; this action has been canceled as a precaution against session hijacking. Go back to the previous page, reload that page and then try again." But now when I hit the login button, it just kicks me to the front page unlogged like this. =_= It's not a browser issue either as I've tried it on two different PC's (well, Macs!). Tabber Issue Again

Hi, Porplemontage, sorry for bothering you about this again, but you remember that tabber issue? I've been experiencing it for a while now. After clearing my cache the first time, it fixed the issue, but it kinda sprung up again. Not only that, the issue also seems to appear when I enter the KHWiki through my phone. I don't think it's because I use Google Chrome? Should I try clearing my cache again? But then again, I'm having the issue when I enter the KHWiki on my phone, so I don't think it really has anything to do with my browser?--Ninja Sheik 22:38, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

Sure, try clearing the cache again. The JavaScript is all there and working, unfortunately it can just be unreliable. We can try switching to the tabber extension and see if it works any better, but we would have to remove the JavaScript tabber and then make the switch right away because having both systems in place at once causes issues. I've installed the extension and did a test on my userpage - since both systems are in place you can see you get double tabs sometimes. --Porplemontage (talk) 00:34, 23 March 2017 (UTC)

I think the tabber issue on my phone was probably due the fact that my phone and not the wiki. I rarely go on any wikias on my phone since it causes my browser on my phone to crash, and it loads slowly due the content there. I'm still having the issue on my computer, so I'll try clearing my cache. Should I clear everything, though, including browsing/downloading history, passwords, and audtofill data? Ban evasion

So, if you're able to take a look at the drama with User talk:Ignis and his use of IPs, can you e-mail me a description of what tools we have to combat that? Unfortunately, there's not much you can do. We've been dealing with ban evaders for years on the MarioWiki, it's just one of the major jobs that an admin does - monitor new users and deal with it. Install Abuse Filter?

Hey, Porplemontage. :) Sorry to bother you, but I had a question. You probably saw that the KHWiki has experienced some excessive vandalism for the last few days due a single user, and I just received word from TheSilentHero we installed a new extension to moderate edits. It kind of reminded of the abuse filter I've seen on a few other wikis, often used by wikis like the Narutopedia because of how large the community is. I was wondering, would it be possible to install something like that here on the KHWiki? I'm not privy to the mechanics behind it, aside what it can do, so I figured I'd ask you. We can't stop users from getting past the bans, but I hope maybe an abuse filter can help?--Ninja Sheik 19:20, 30 July 2017 (UTC)

The Moderation extension we just installed makes sure that every edit from new users is reviewed before being published. Because we don't have a ton of new editors, this suits the wiki well. If we ever want to ease off of the Moderation extension, I can see moving to the AbuseFilter extension. This would allow new user edits to go through right away, with the admins setting filters to catch certain actions. Because the Moderation extension is so strong, I don't think there's a need for both at the same time. --Porplemontage (talk) 19:52, 30 July 2017 (UTC)

Countdown issues

Hey, Porple, had a question. We seem to be having issues with the Countdown extension on KHWiki:End of Year Event 2017. For some reason, it keeps flipping between showing the timer is counting down, showing the expire message, or showing the expire message with either the countdown frozen or the expire time next to it. I've checked it a couple times, and I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong to cause this. Any ideas? Keyblade Spy Master 02:26, 27 October 2017 (UTC)

KrytenKoro's Credentials

It looks KrytenKoro is leaving the KHWiki, but has not demoted his status as an admin/bureaucrat. I'm trying to find a way to that on the Special Pages, but the functions are bit different from what I'm used to seeing on the Central Wikia. I've contacted Kryten on his talk page and email, but I don't know if he'll reply. Neumz has been AWOL for a year, too, so I'm kind of uneasy of having the KHWiki with no bureaucrats. The community talked about doing a revision with the staff since it's out of date, but we haven't gotten to it yet. That said, I'll broach on it with the rest of the community, but even if the community elects someone else to replace the two, it doesn't help if neither of them can be reached. Hey there. That search feature requires installing a whole different search engine, there is a lot to that. Sometimes I use Special:ReplaceText (currently disabled) to do a complex search and get a list of pages, with or without actually replacing anything. Here is the result of a tabbertab search - it can only do 250 at a time so when those are done I can run it again and get the next 250! --Porplemontage (talk) 20:18, 6 March 2019 (UTC)

Left side navigation

Hello! I'm Joe, we didn't really talk before lol. Anyway, I've recently been updating the wiki's theme and other little doodads. That includes updating a few things on the sidebar menus, including the fonts. In addition to no longer looking pixelated, they now have these nifty little icons. However, as a result on the slightly larger resolution, it appears they've getting cutoff. I'm told this is a CSS issue, and I don't have the necessary permission to tweak those particular nav templates. Do you think you can make them whole image appear correctly over the sidebars? If it can't be done, I can make them smaller and simpler, but....it'd be really nice if it can be done. :) Bold text

Main page

Hey, sorry about the main page looking a little different than intended. Me and KSM were in the middle of trying out something new when he had to get off. Longer short of it, we're trying to apply the Gummiphone background for the main page boxes below the game portal, starting with the Quote of the Moment. [This backdrop specifically]. It's why the icons were changed - the idea is to emulate the gummiphone and X tres menu. [From his experiment], it turned out quite good! Do you think you can apply it while retaining the rounded edges and shadow effect? Thumbnails not displaying properly

God I hope this wasn't me lol, but I may have broken our wiki. :| I uploaded two files - nothing special, just the command deck windows for Dream Drop Distance HD and Re:coded. But when I added them to their respective pages, I noticed that all the thumbnails no longer display transparencies correctly! They have white backgrounds, instead of the grey thumbnail gradients they're supposed to. Before I uploaded and added the images, everything looked fine though. I first want to say the scrolling text looks absolutely fantastic. I have one question, though. Is it possible to customize how long it takes for the text to loop for each individual image?
