Ten years before Sora's first journey, Kingdom Hearts appears blue in the sky above the Keyblade Graveyard. The graveyard is all that remains of a conflict called the Keyblade War, set many years before. Keyblade Masters affiliated with both Light and Darkness fought to obtain the legendary χ-blade, capable of unlocking Kingdom Hearts. The Keyblade Masters failed and destroyed themselves; all that remain are their weapons which litter the desolate world.

Some time after, an aged Keyblade Master named Master Xehanort formulated a plan to create the χ-blade, intending to recreate the Keyblade War. In his reports, Xehanort explains his views of the equilibrium of Light and Darkness and how they countered those from Master Eraqus's. Opposite to Eraqus's beliefs of light being absolute, Xehanort saw that light could not exist without darkness. Xehanort believed that the balance between light and darkness was what sustained the worlds. However, he noticed that light was prevailing and that darkness was excluded too much. As a result, he created a goal for himself to destroy the current system of light and recreate a new system of darkness, and through the rise of darkness, he would reorganize the worlds.
Ten years before Sora's first journey, Kingdom Hearts appears blue in the sky above the Keyblade Graveyard, the site of an ancient conflict called the Keyblade War. Keyblade Masters affiliated with both Light and Darkness fought to obtain the legendary χ-blade, a weapon capable of summoning and unlocking Kingdom Hearts. The war affected other worlds before ending with the fallen combatant's Keyblades littering the desolate world and the χ-blade scattered into seven lights and thirteen darknesses. Some time after, an aged Keyblade Master named Master Xehanort saw that the current system of light that resulted from the Keyblade War unbalanced a world order that needed darkness. To that end, Xehanort formulated a plan to recreate the χ-blade to cause another Keyblade War from which a new system of darkness would come into being.

Along with the χ-blade, Xehanort also needed one more ingredient in his plan: a vessel. As a result, his search for the vessel led him to Terra. He saw that Terra was looking for power, and that through obtaining this power, his heart would also give birth to darkness. Thus, with this observation, Xehanort concluded that Terra was to be his new vessel.
As part of that plan, and to prolong his life, Xehanort needed an ideal vessel with an heart of darkness. Though he intended his apprentice Ventus to be that host, the youth's reluctance forces Xehanort to separate Ventus's darkness to create Vanitas. Though he expected Ventus's not to survived, his survival inspired Xehanort to set up events to create a χ-blade by reintegrating Vanitas back into Ventus once the two are of equal strength. Leaving Ventus in the care of his friend Master Eraqus, who knew of his plan yet thought he abandoned it, Xehanort's search for the vessel led him to Terra.

At first, Xehanort's plans worked well, as he set the scene for his dreams to come into fruition. In the end, he succeeded in creating the χ-blade by way of manipulating his former apprentice, Ventus, and his dark counterpart, Vanitas. With the creation of the χ-blade, Xehanort stopped his battle with Terra, released his heart through striking his chest with his own Keyblade, and transfered his heart into Terra's body. However, after obtaining Terra's body, part of Terra's emotions went into the discarded armor, forming the Lingering Will. Xehanort lost to the Lingering Will in a battle and fainted, unable to continue his plans with Kingdom Hearts.
At first, after manipulation of events, Xehanort's plans worked well, as he set the scene for his dreams to come into fruition. In the end, as Kingdom Hearts appears, Xehanort apparently succeeded in creating the χ-blade by Ventus's forced union with Vanitas and transferring his heart into Terra's body. However, as the χ-blade created by the unification of Ventus and Vanitas was unstable, Terra-Xehanort finds himself facing Terra's Lingering Will and is knocked out become being consumed in the χ-blade's explosion that sends him to Radiant Garden.
