One of the pieces of text in the hidden ending video for Kingdom Hearts II, "the Gathering", mentions a Keyblade War. Hundreds of Keyblades can be seen stuck into the ground during this cinematic, as well as the extended "Birth by sleep" cinematic at the end of Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix. It should be noted that none of these seemingly abandoned Keyblades, nor those of protagonists Aqua, Terra or Ventus, have keychains, although the significance of this detail is currently unknown as the history of the Keyblades is unknown and the trio have been shown later to have keychains attached to their keyblades in Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep. Many of these Keyblades seem to be based on Keyblades already shown in the series, but many more are entirely original and new. Master Xehanort also stated that the thousands of Keyblades left are the ruins of the Keyblade War.

Keychains
Keychains are items that, when attached to a Keychain, change its shape and properties.  One particular Keychain may give the Keyblade a large boost in attack power, while another may lengthen the user's MP gauge.  In gameplay terms, Keychains basically act as interchangeable weapons, and can be switched to suit a particular player's playstyle or situation.
Story-wise, Keychains have never really been elaborated upon.  Often, they are gifts from someone Sora builds a bond with in each world; other times, they are simply given to the player out of nowhere once the player has completed a particular objective.  In one particular instance, a Keychain (Oblivion))was simply unceremoniously found in a treasure chest.  There doesn't seem to be any particular rules or patterns as to how or why Keychains are obtained, and once a Keychain falls into Sora's possession, they are rarely, if ever, referred to again (the sole exception being Oathkeeper, which was specifically a gift from Kairi).
In Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Roxas utilizes Gears, which function more or less exactly the same as Keychains would.  Story-wise, much like Keychains, they are neither referred to, nor elaborated upon, and are simply seen as a gameplay feature.
Other than the player character (Sora, Roxas, Ventus, Terra, Aqua)), no other character is ever seen switching between Keychains.  While King Mickey has utilized the Star Seeker in Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Key D in all other instances in which he is showing using a Keyblade, he has never used them both in the same game.  Notably, despite being a party member in Kingdom Hearts II, the player cannot switch Riku's Way to the Dawn with any other Keychain.  However, considering that the three Key-Bearers in Birth By Sleep were able to equip different Keychains with no problems, it can be assumed that the changeability of Keychains is a universal trait of all Keyblades.
