Armored King - Why do you loathe those who are nothing?
TALK - The Dark Master 03:00, January 26, 2011 (UTC)
We need to dicuss the fate of this wiki. For instance:
  • How will the wiki be managed after the move.
  • Who should be the new administrators after the current ones movw to the new wiki.
  • Who will be staying andwho will be going.

Yes I know the wiki will become more fan based.Howver there are some who want to preserve this wiki.

They should move with the wiki, then. The wiki will be preserved, but in a different location. Otherwise, they have no one to blame but themselves. --Neumannz, The Dark Falcon 03:19, January 26, 2011 (UTC)

When will the wiki be moved? I'd like to know.--NinjaSheik 03:21, January 26, 2011 (UTC)

We all would... --Neumannz, The Dark Falcon 03:21, January 26, 2011 (UTC)

Well others will stay while others will go we should really be fair to those who are staying.--Dark Master

[facepalm] What are you talking about? It's not like it's gonna take any actual effort on their part to go to the new location. If they want to continue with this wiki in its current form and function, they can. They just have to type in a different URL. What the devil is the issue here? --Neumannz, The Dark Falcon 03:26, January 26, 2011 (UTC)

Now, now, no need to be upset. So, when we moved the wiki, we're just..."moving", right? We don't have to recreate the articles or anything again, do we? Sorry I'm a bit slow on things, I haven't really be tuned in lately around the forums. Never was, really.--NinjaSheik 03:29, January 26, 2011 (UTC)

Why is it that everyone's under the impression that "fan-based" means "fanon" and thus "fan-fiction" and thus "crap"? There is already a fanon wiki, even a bloody fan-fiction wiki. Hosting fanon material like that is pointless, as there are countless wikis exactly for that purpose. The wiki won't need real preserving because we're not really going to change. We're just throwing in a more fan-based approach to the place, rather than a professional approach. Aya caramba, I might just have to make a whole forum centered around the distinct differences between "fanon" and "fan-based" if the misconception continues.

<end of rant>

That's right, LadyShiek, everything, including edit histories, will all be copied over in its entirety. It already has been once, but that was a while ago, and it needs to be updated when we finally do the move. --Neumannz, The Dark Falcon 03:32, January 26, 2011 (UTC)

@Lego: Eh, don't get Kryten started, he'll tell you that you're wrong, and that the real problem is that people confuse "fanon" with "fanfics"... --Neumannz, The Dark Falcon 03:34, January 26, 2011 (UTC)
@Neumanz: Sounds like a work, huh? But, I can't let that get me down! Moving the wiki means we lose the count of all the edits we have ever made here, huh? We'll start at 0 again, don't we? That's really depressing...I worked so hard to get the numbers of edits I have now...--NinjaSheik 03:38, January 26, 2011 (UTC)
It was my understanding the edit counts will be moved over as well. maggosh 03:38, January 26, 2011 (UTC)
I heard that too, but I kind of like the idea of starting anew with the editcount. -- LegoAlchemist  03:41, January 26, 2011 (UTC)

Ok, maybe I worded that wrong. It's basically a database dump, so we don't actually have to do anything ourselves. Porple (if I remember the name right) basically exported the whole dealie to his database, and when we're ready, he'll do it again. Everything will be intact, edit histories, user editcounts, etc. --Neumannz, The Dark Falcon 03:50, January 26, 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, the "update" Neyumannz was walking about was just that Porple needs to copy over the changes that occurred since he first did it. We're pretty literally just changing the web adress we type in.LapisLazuliScarab03:55, January 26, 2011 (UTC)

Sounds too good to be true! I'm happy. Then I made my decision, I want to move to the new one. I want to stay professional, but more importantly, I want to stay with my friends because I know you guys are great users and can take care of the wiki when not here to help. Guess what I'm really saying is that I'm more comfortable if I know my friends have my back.--NinjaSheik 03:57, January 26, 2011 (UTC)

TheDarkMaster: Forums are for reading, not ignoring or practically re-making. Most if not all of these issues have already been settled in previous discussions.

Also, please ask a staff member to sticky a forum thread next time. Desticky'd.

The only thing I feel that I need to comment on is our moving time. Now that the revote is done and SEIWA has been chosen, I think we just need to contact porplemontage and ahve the database re-exported. This means, though, that no editing should be done during this time, so we should probably finish all preperations for the move NOW. What this entails:

  • The remaining community for the fansite wiki needs to get together, perhaps in a thread without the interjection of the editors who are moving, to decide...
    • what articles that would like deleted. Many of them are completely useless to a fansite-oriented wiki, such as ability and armor articles that might better be covered in a simple list page, like FFWiki does.
    • who they would like to take on certain responsibilities of the wiki, such as main editor of the news and the executive(s) behind the arena (I think the Mirage Arena is moving).
    • The specifics of the policies to be removed, laid back, or withdrawn, right down to the fine print and context.
    • any desired reconstructing--such as reordering the main page or article formats to be less professional and more aesthetically pleasing.
  • Make the community aware, at least a few days in advance, of when the re-export is occurring. It is a long process, so we will have to make sure nobody is editing at the time of the export. I think large and obnoxiously bold messages in the site notice, community center, and main page should cover that.
  • Find our old Monaco spread, skin, and format codes, if needed, for the new site.
  • Lastly, release a statement somewhere on the wiki that notifies the readers that the KHWiki has moved off-Wikia, so that we do not lose all of our traffic. We can either do a one-sentence message or a longer message, maybe two or three paragraphs. I like the later more, personally.

If I missed anything, just holler. If we could get this started N-O-W, that would be great. I'm dying to move, and I quite literally am happy to get out of the Wikia network as soon as possible, so be sure to go bother KrytenKoro about it, since he's in cahoots with Porplemontage. Bother bother.

Talk to me! - Soxxeh 7:00am, January 26, 2011 (UTC)
As a member who will be on both Wikis, I will hold a forum thread tomorrow around 9pm GMT (if no one else has done yet at that point) to round up everyone involved and determine the future of the Wikia-Wiki based on the questions Door introduced.

As for Monaco, I recently set up a Wiki on a separate server and had a hard time tracking down a working version. The closest I got was something called Monacobook, which was ripped from Wikia. Many of the scripts aren't working (such as submenus and the top-right user menu), forcing me to have to edit them best I could; it's a far cry from what will need to be done in the future.

In all honesty a forum thread should be created detailing why we have moved and where. It can be in a few sentences in the announcement, then linked to the thread. It's important to inform everyone involved, and that's probably the most effective method. A nice boldface 36px font should do.

In my opinion, we need to get the move over and done with before the end of the weekend. It's been in the works long enough; time to get boogeying.

TALK -
I've been trying to get a hold of porple, and this is what I know so far: [1].

I've asked him to keep me posted, but...this is a real kick in the pants, and it has damaged my confidence in the site (I still think it's the best option, but...)

So, options:

  • Wait for porple to put the site back up, perform the move then.
  • Create our own site (the SEIWA-misc option).
    • This would require funding from us, and I no longer have the money I thought I would, due to various family issues. I'm tapped out.
  • Hold the revote again.

Personally, as long as porple can guarantee that the site will be put back up, and will have the various features we needed added (monaco, correct url), then I would accept waiting. If he can't, then we probably have to have a serious discussion about what to do.

Put the Wikia-Wiki decision thread on hold (for obvious reasons).

Kryten, how much do you estimate would server maintenance costs be, monthly?
