-The Destiny Islands serve as the starting point for Sora and Riku's [[Mark of Mastery exam]]. Taking on the forms of their younger selves, the young Keyblade wielders depart on a raft. Their voyage under way, Sora and Riku are caught in a terrible storm, after which a phantom Ursula rises from the ocean below and attacks. Sora and Riku emerge victorious, but upon Ursula's destruction, a whirlpool drags them underwater. Barely conscious, Sora and Riku use their Keyblades to unlock the Keyhole to Traverse Town.
+As part of their [[Mark of Mastery Exam]], Sora and Riku are sent back to the Destiny Islands before it was swallowed by the darkness and became a [[Sleeping World]]; additionally, they were reverted back to the age they were when they world was destroyed, so they could relearn old and new skills. Once the storm arrives, the raft's sail is broken off by powerful winds, leaving Sora and Riku stranded in the middle of the sea. To their shock, Ursula emerges from the waters as a giant, mentioning that "[[Master Xehanort|someone]]" told her where they were. They manage to defeat Ursula, but the currents pull them underwater, where they open a Keyhole to the [[Realm of Sleep]]. Above water, [[Ansem, Seeker of Darkness|Ansem]] watches; he later reveals to Riku that he subconsciously noticed the danger he posed and entered Sora's dreams to keep him safe from [[Nightmare]]s.

+The islands appear again when Sora is put to sleep by Young Xehanort. In the dream, he sees Ansem meeting the younger version of himself, with present version explaining that he was tasked by his future self to travel through time. He then goes on to explain that Ansem was not only present the night the islands were swallowed by darkness to watch the event, but to ensure that he and the other versions of Xehanort could interfere with the Mark of Mastery exam for their own ends.
