| In a part of the world called [[Daybreak Town]], mysterious weapons known as "Keyblades" are forged in the χ-blade's image. Daybreak Town's residents strive to understand the reason for these weapons' existence and decipher their true nature. Daybreak Town is home to five schools, in which people can learn to become Keyblade wielders. Each school teaches the art of Keyblade wielding in a different fashion and emphasizes different strengths, techniques, and qualities. The five schools often compete to see which can produce the strongest Keyblade wielder. Those who survive the harsh trials of their training become Keyblade Masters. Each school in Daybreak Town is overseen by a mysterious [[Foreteller]].

| One day, the Foretellers discover the great conflict that has slowly begun to consume the world. To preserve order in Daybreak Town and increase its defenses, the Foretellers send their students on various missions across several unique "worlds"; the students' ultimate goal in each world is to collect crystallized fragments of light known as "[[Lux]]" with the help of special, cat-like [[Dream Eater]]s known as "[[Chirithy]]." Unbeknownst to the Foretellers' students, the "worlds" they visit are not real; they are merely holograms of places that will exist in the future, born of the [[Book of Prophecies]] in each Foreteller's possession.

| Things take a turn for the worst when a mysterious man arrives in Daybreak Town; his presence somehow allows the forces of darkness to invade. Malevolent creatures that come to be known as "[[Heartless]]" start to appear all over Daybreak Town; it is up to five strong Keyblade wielders (one from each Union), who have an important destiny to fulfill, to stop them. By teaming up and putting their differences aside, the student of Anguis named Ciel, the student of Leopardos named Ephemera, the student of Unicornis named Brand, the student of Ursus named Rain, and the student of Vulpeus named Linnea are able to save Daybreak Town, or so it seems.

| After they complete a few missions with the rest of the members of their respective Unions, Ciel, Ephemera, Brand, Rain, and Linnea are summoned before the Foretellers, who reveal that the darkness has found its way into the "worlds" that are accessed through their Books of Prophecies. At that moment, the Keyblade wielders and their Chirithy are given a special, secret assignment: to save these "worlds" before it is too late.

| Ciel, Brand, Linnea, and Rain separate and reunite various times over the course of their journey; they encounter many of the worlds' denizens, as well as other Keyblade wielders, from whom they learn of the war raging around them. The heroes discover that the man who caused the chaos in Daybreak Town is named [http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20141005062358/the-kh-canon-fanon/images/6/67/Animus_Lineart.png Animus]; he is determined to erase all traces of light by destroying Kingdom Hearts. While his companions remain steadfast in their goals and objectives, Rain starts to walk down a darker path. He manipulates his friends into traveling to the [[Keyblade Graveyard|Badlands]], the place where the war rages.

| In the final battle of what goes down in history as the Keyblade War, the heroes attempt to destroy Animus. However, they only defeat his physical form; it is revealed that he is the physical manifestation of the darkness born of the Keyblade War. In his dying moments, Animus uses Kingdom Hearts to spread darkness across all worlds. He vanishes from existence, and chaos ensues as the ultimate heart of light is corrupted and the worlds start to fall apart and die along with it.

| Rain flees in his cowardice, unbeknownst to his comrades. Meanwhile, Ciel, Brand, and Linnea sacrifice the light in their hearts, and thus their lives, to restore the worlds in a splintered form. The Keyblade War is put to an immediate end; the Badlands become a graveyard for the many Keyblade-wielding warriors who gave their lives in pursuit of the χ-blade.
