-Riku is the oldest of the group on [[Destiny Islands]]. (Sora and [[Kairi]] are a year younger at age 14.) He constantly is competing with Sora. Together, with Sora and Kairi, Riku works on building a raft to try to sail to other worlds. In a period of days, the raft is built and ready. on the day they intend to sail though, their world is attacked by dark beings known as the [[Heartless]]. Sora upon finding out, runs to Riku who stands on a miniature island, looking at an orb of darkness in the sky. Riku exclaims to Sora that it is a way to see other worlds. Sora still is worried but prepares to go with Riku. Suddenly a circle of darkness surrounds Riku, and begins to wrap around him. In a flash of light, Riku disappears and Sora discovers the [[keyblade]]. Later on, Riku appears in [[Traverse Town]], fighting some heartless. Soon he goes to Sora. He and Sora converse about other worlds and Sora asks [[Donald Duck]] if Riku can journey with them. Donald refuses, and suddenly, Riku disappears. He later watches Sora converse with [[Leon]] and the others about finding Riku. [[Maleficent]] convinces Riku that Sora has replaced him with new friends and has him join the Heartless. Riku appears once more in [[Monstro]], kidnapping [[Pinnochio]], and trying to get Sora to befriend him. Finally, Riku appears in [[Never Land]], with Kairi, who, appears to have lost her heart. But here, Riku has the ability to control Heartless and even makes a shadow-like version of Sora! In [[Hollow Bastion]], Riku steals the keyblade and tosses Sora his wooden sword. (the weapon Sora uses in the beginning of the game.) Donald and [[Goofy]] follow Riku believing his words about Sora being, 'just the delivery boy'. Afterwards, Sora gets the keyblade back and his friends join him in and epic fight against Riku. Riku returns once more, but seems to have merged with the mysterious man in the brown cloak that Sora met on Destiny Islands. Riku now has a [[Dark Keyblade]], which he uses to convert a weak maleficent into her dragon form. After words, Sora fight Riku again and defeats him, but this time Riku has been possessed by [[Ansem]]. After the Battle, Riku turns into Ansem completely, but after Sora releases his heart to free the seven princesses, Ansem comes to get Kairi, Donald, and Goofy. Riku appeared like a ghost and somehow held back Ansem. In his final appearance in the game, Riku is behind the door to darkness helping [[King Mickey]] and Sora close it for good.

He proceeds to form [[Anti-Sora]], a dark reflection of Sora formed from his shadow, to demonstrate the powers of darkness granted to him. He then makes his leave, but not before instructing Captain Hook that the captured [[Wendy]] is not a Princess of Heart.

This time, however, Riku does something shocking: he calls the Keyblade from Sora and to his own hands. Riku explains that the Keyblade had never chosen Sora--he was only a temporary recipient, and Riku is the real chosen one. Riku then tosses Sora a wooden toy sword mockingly, and leaves, Donald and Goofy going with him as per [[King Mickey|King Mickey's]] orders, though regretfully.

But Riku intends to prove his side of the argument, and launches an orb of darkness at Sora. However, Goofy intervenes and blocks the attack, and he and Donald return to Sora. Sora, proclaiming that his heart is strong thanks to all his friends, suddenly regains the Keyblade. The two then fight, but Riku is driven off.

Riku does so, but ends up possessed by Xehanort's Heartless, claiming to be Ansem.

But unlike Sora's Keyblade, this Keyblade possesses the ability to unlock a person's heart, and demonstrates by piercing Maleficent's, allowing the immense darkness that is attracted to her to overtake her heart, transforming her into a giant dragon.
+Later, Xehanort's Heartless waits for Sora at the location of Hollow Bastion's keyhole. Kairi's body also rests nearby. Sora confronts him, though he is seperated from Donald and Goofy. Xehanort's Heartless reveals to Sora that Kairi's heart has been in Sora's heart all along, and that she is the seventh princess of heart required to unlock the way to [[Kingdom Hearts (combined heart)|Kingdom Hearts]]. And in order to release her heart, he intends to go through Sora's. But Sora is not willing, and fights back. His strength drives off Xehanort's Heartless, who leaves behind the dark Keyblade. Sora then sacrifices himself by impaling himself with the Keyblade, restoring Kairi. However, with Sora gone, Kairi is left with Donald and Goofy, who are not powerful enough to confront Xehanort's Heartless, who has taken on his own appearance while still occupying Riku's body. Before Xehanort's Heartless can attack though, Riku appears, using the last of his strength to hold Xehanort's Heartless back. Kairi and the others then make their escape. Xehanort's Heartless is not deterred, and simply heads towards Kingdom Hearts.

Riku is then restored, and appears on the other side of the Door to Darkness, aiding Sora in closing it, but unable to cross it, as only pure darkness can go back and forth through the door. In addition, their efforts to close the door aren't making progress, while countless Heartless are waiting to enter the [[Realm of Light]]. But King Mickey wards them off, and with his Keyblade and Sora's, they are able to seal the door. But before it is closed, Riku tells Sora to take care of Kairi.
