As pointed out above the game uses both names, Player is used directly in the game most prominently above the HP bar while Avatar is only used in the clothing menu and by Square Enix in their update/event/e.t.c notes. I'm not sure if they are really synonymous in SE's eyes since Player seems to be just a placeholder for the character's name while Avatar is the more technical term.
